Week 6 Syllabus, 11/23/15

LAST WEEK WE EXAMINED POETRY RELATING TO GENDER roles in America. Ultimately, you will write a multi-genre paper on Chopin's novella, The Awakening. It will include indirect evidence and direct evidence on Cassatt's "The Boating Party," and will also cite a poem from our supplementary materials.

MONDAY

  • Brainstorming information about both Chopin and Cassatt. What are the most important, least obvious things to know? Creating mind-maps that illustrate your core ideas, and the evidence that supports them. Mind map: a visual illustration of thinking, pointing out connections, relationships, depth of detail. Often uses color purposefully and has a legend.
  • HW: Mind-map is due tomorrow in class. Take your initial idea (women as center, water, discomfort in role, spacial constraint, movement/direction, control or lack of control, tension between gender roles, imagination as escape, disconnect, role of nature) and develop it in depth.

TUESDAY

  • Creating an argument outline for your paper. What are the potential sub-arguments that you can make? Counter arguments or hedges you should make? What do other experts say about your ideas? We will add complexity to the argument you started in class yesterday. Time permitting, we will watch part of a documentary on the history of Thanksgiving.
  • HW: First draft of paper is due Monday.

WEDNESDAY

  • Literature relating to the history of Thanksgiving. Students may also use class time to begin writing their first draft of the Chopin paper.
  • HW: First draft due in class on Monday. Have a hard copy printed out and stapled.

THURSDAY

FRIDAY
