Week 7 Syllabus, 11/30/15

WE WILL FINALLY SHIFT INTO TRANSCENDENTALISM now that we have finished the papers comparing Kate Chopin's The Awakening to Mary Cassatt's painting, "The Boating Party." Also this week, we will discuss how to select a novel for the junior theme assignment.

MONDAY

  • A final look at two of our Awakening sources, the Black Feminista's take on Friedan's The Feminine Mystique as well as the 2007 Atlantic article, "The Truth About Beauty." Connected to these two articles, we will look at this dove campaign commercial, "Evolution," as well as this viral video on how photoshop is used to manipulate the image of beauty in America.
  • HW: Bring four hard copies of your essay to class tomorrow. One you will keep. The other three your classmates will read and provide editorial feedback upon, feedback that addresses your identified need, what trends they see as needing revision, and critical and constructive advice for revision.

TUESDAY

  • Breaking into small groups to read drafts of our comparative, multi-genre paper using Kate Chopin's novella "The Awakening" aloud. This will be a final peer edit that allows you to see what classmates are writing about, the connections they see between the novella and Cassatt's painting, and how they include an additional source (poem).
  • HW: Final first-drafts are due tomorrow at the start of class.

WEDNESDAY

  • Today we begin our unit of study on American transcendentalism. What is this word that begins with "t" and ends with "ism"? We will watch this video, a student project that provides one definition. We will then turn to our packet of class materials, and begin reading the chapter introducing the term.
  • HW: Take notes while you read. What is transcendentalism? You will write a second definition using these notes. Bring that to class with you tomorrow.

THURSDAY

  • Introduction to Transcendentalism continued. We will start by discussing your notes from last night's reading. We will then begin listening to and reading Thoreau's Walden together, starting with chapter one, "Economy."
  • Read up through and including page 10 of the essay by Thoreau, "Economy."

FRIDAY

  • We will continue reading Thoreau's essay, "Economy," finishing his analysis of clothing, and moving into his criticisms on housing. Make certain that you mark new or interesting vocabulary. Also, keep a list of aphorisms, maxims, mottoes that strike your interest. I will also talk about how to parse through Thoreau's voice, his use of sarcasm, over and understatement, and allusion.
  • Read up through and including the poem on page 21 of HDT's essay for class on Monday. Also, spend time looking at novels. Have a list of FIVE that could potentially be the novel you read for your junior theme. We will meet in the library on Monday, and you should have that list with you there.
