Week 3 Syllabus, 11/2/15

HOW DO BOTH CHOPIN AND CASSATT EMBODY the women's movement, the spirit of independence in Edna Pontillier and "The Boating Party"?  This week we will finish the novella, I will return the papers on the Puritans, and

Monday

  • We will continue with (and finish--for now) the Mary Cassatt documentary. How is Mary Cassatt's biography an idealized life that Edna Pontillier only dreams of? And how the subject matter of Cassatt's paintings thematically similar to Chopin's literature--Suffrage and the Modern Women's Movement? 
  • HW: Complete the study guide for chapters 26-30, and for these questions, please include textual evidence from the novella. These should be short, direct quotes. Due tomorrow. 

Tuesday

  •  Today we will meet in small research groups, looking into Mary Cassatt's "Modern Women" mural from the 1893 World's Columbian Exhibition and Fair in Chicago. The mural, now lost, is documented here: http://arcadiasystems.org/academia/cassatt.html Students will want to have charged ipads with you in class. 
  • HW:  Reading chapters 31-32. 

Wednesday

  • Today will study and read about one of Chopin's works, "The Boating Party." As with yesterday, you will want to have  your ipads charged. 
  • HW: Read chapters 33-35

Thursday

  • Today I will return and we will review some of the stylistic issues around the Puritan papers with an eye toward the Chopin papers. 
  • HW: Read chapter 36 and 37. 

 

Friday

  • We will begin tracing one of a few themes--this one the sea as a metaphor. Today we will collect quotes on this theme in a google document. I will also outline plans for revising the Puritan paper. 
  • HW: Finish reading the novella over the weekend, chapters 38-39. I will collect and grade your annotations on Monday.
