Week 3 Syllabus, 9/8/2015

LONG & SHORT FICTION, NON-fiction, painting, documentary, film, speeches, declarations, and poetry. We have studied literature and art in numerous forms to build a deeper appreciation for the novel you read over the summer. Now it is time to revisit the in-class, timed essay and revise it to incorporate some of these materials. After doing so, we will move on to our second major text, Miller's play The Crucible.

Monday

  • No school for Labor Day.
  • HW: Because I did not return the essays on Friday (out sick), you cannot revise them. Thus, on Tuesday we will revisit the paragraphs on the poems, and I will return the timed essays. Wednesday I will review body paragraph structure and how to write multi-genre body paragraphs. The revision will be due one week from Wednesday.

Tuesday

  • In class check of your notes on The Searchers, paragraph on that same film, and notes on Reel Injun. While I am doing that, students will resume meeting in small groups to write poetry paragraphs. I will pass back in-class essays on the summer reading at end of class.
  • HW: re-read and type your essay word-for-word, exactly as you wrote it. After saving the file (name it: lastname_firstname_RH_easton), turn on the track chanes BEFORE beginning revisions.

Wednesday

  • Lecture on writing multi-genre body paragraphs.
  • HW: Begin revising Roundhouse essay, due one week from today. Bring your copy of Miller's play, The Crucible to class tomorrow.  You will also want to start watching the video for this weekend, as it is just under two hours long.

Thursday

  • Introduction to the Puritans: multi-genre chapter from S. Vowell's The Wordy Shipmates and foundational documents (city on a hill, starving time, and witchcraft).
  • HW:  Finish reading the SV handout for class on Friday.

Friday

  • Reading of an introduction to the play together in class, practicing annotation techniques.
  • HW: You are to watch the documentary, None Without Sin, available via Webdav Nav on your ipads. If you expect viewing will be a problem, please bring a flash drive to school and download it while at school, for viewing at home. It is located in the N:\READ\English\Easton\video folder. The file is called "miller_kazan_none_without_sin" and is 1:50 minutes long. Remember, your RH revision is due Wednesday.
