Week 10 Syllabus, 3/7/16
LAST WEEK, WE READ THROUGH SEVERAL DOCUMENTS IN OUR WILDERNESS essay that is a short, multi-genre essay between 2-3 pages in length and cites three different sources, including a short-story, a poem, and another source of your choice. The essay should present a claim that answers the question: What question about Americans' view of nature and wilderness do these writers and artists explore? Your argumentative essay will be due on Monday, March 14.
MONDAY
- No class for late start day.
- HW: I will collect your novels tomorrow.
TUESDAY
- Turning in theme books for an annotation grade. Today we will continue writing thematic questions based upon sources, this time poetry. We will read several of the nature poems together, in small group writing questions that identify what the poet seeks to understand about nature via the poem. We will share these as a class, focusing upon the benefit of collaboration when interpreting literature and writing interpretive questions.
- HW: Annotations for 3 of your 10 author/novel sources due tomorrow.
WEDNESDAY
- T-Q-S. Lecture on the topic, question, significance as presented in Craft of Research. Drafting those examples in class today. You should have these entered into our new google doc, "TQS Answers" by Thursday.
- HW: Write an answer to the question, "What question about Americans' view of nature do these authors and artists explore? Then, write at least one page answering your question. If you struggle to come up with one page, you should revisit your question, as it may either be too specific or too broad for your purposes.
THURSDAY
- Small group sharing of yesterday's homework.
- Turning toward the documentary Grizzly Man.
- HW: Revise your entries on the TQS google sheet tonight. These need to be more specific, and should reflect meaningful questions that are real and answerable.
The T-Q-S notes, as presented in class on Tuesday.
FRIDAY
- Grizzly Man. I will briefly discuss an outline for your essay, due Monday.
- HW: We will finish the unit on nature and wilderness by writing a short paper on Wednesday of next week. You should have a claim, a TQS, and an outlline with you in class on Monday. Our next unit will be a reading of Ellison's canonical novel, Invisible Man, and the writing of your junior theme. For this unit, you MUST have a print edition of the book. An E-book will not suffice.
