Syllabus for week of November 25
Monday
- Today we will continue with the documentary on Greek civilization during the 5th century b.c.e.. We will see Athens rise from a rural backwater to an international trading power, the rise of Hippias' brutal attempts at self-preservation, Cleisthenes overthrow of this tyrant in 510 b.c.e. and the increasing power of demos and the rise of a meritocracy, and the defeat of Isagora in 508, the first step toward empire.
- HW: Reading chapter three in Campbell's Myths to Live By, "The Importance of Rites."
Tuesday
- What are the rites we have seen, so far, in the Iliad? Closer, textual-based discussion of books 11 and 12.
- HW: Finish reading chapter two of Jung: A Very Short Introduction, "Archetypes and the collective unconscious." Also read books 13 and 14.
Wednesday
- No class for Thanksgiving break.
Thursday
- No class for Thanksgiving Day

- HW: Remember to finish chapter two of the Jung and books 13 and 14 for Monday.
