Syllabus for Week of November 18

Monday

  • Brief lecture on the gods' role in human life in book 5, the saving of Aeneas and the injury of Aphrodite by Diomedes (after given the divine mantle by Athena). Reading book six of Iliad together, wherein we see humans struggling to make sense of their world (the Hector and the Trojans).
  • HW: Reading book seven in Iliad (Paris and Hector enter battle, burial of the dead).

Tuesday

  • Reading of book 8.
  • HW: Reading the next four pages on archetype in chapter two of Jung: A Very Short Introduction, pages 50-(top of) 55, and reading of book 9.

Wednesday

  • Class discussion on ancient war. We will then begin a documentary on 5th century Athens, during the golden era of ancient Greece, the time during which Homeric and other, lost epic-poems would have been popular.
  • HW: Read book 9 of the Iliad.

Thursday

  • No class for parent teacher conferences
  • HW: Reading book 10 of Iliad.

Friday

  • No class for teacher institute day.
  • HW: Reading books 11 and 12 of Iliad.
