Syllabus for Week of November 3

Monday

  • Today we will start to look at Homer's Iliad, and will likewise begin to look at Jungian archetypes via Pearson's Awakening the Hero Within. We will also start a lecture/video on the golden age of Greek mythology.
  • HW: Read the chapter "Warrior" from the Pearson.

Tuesday

  • We will finish the lecture on the Trojan War. Overview on annotating the Iliad, what themes to look for. And we will start reading Book 1. Those students who did not turn in a revision of their Ramayana essay should do so today. 
  • HW: Finish reading Book 1. Remember to bring your Jung text to class.

Wednesday

  • Class discussion on Book 1. We will then look at Hesiod's Theogony, his description of how the ancient Greek divine structure was established. 
  • HW: Read book 2 of the Iliad.

Thursday

  • Discussion of Book 1, followed by finishing our reading of Hesiod.
  • HW: Read up through and including page 28 in Jung: A Very Short Introduction. for class tomorrow. 

Friday

  • Finishing our look at the biographic section of the Jung text. Discussion of book 2
  • HW: Read books 3 and 4 of Homer's Iliad.

Monday

  • Small group discussion of Book 3 and 4, wherein we see Paris and Menelaus face off, the gods intervention, and the marshaling of troops prior to battle. What do these books tell us about the ancient Greeks view of war, leadership, piety, and fate? Short answer written in class, collected prior to leaving. 
  • HW: Finishing chapter one in Jung: A Very Short Introduction for class tomorrow. 

Tuesday

  • Overview of Jung life. We will begin by reading the start of an overview on Jung.
