Syllabus for Week of September 30

Monday

  • We will begin to watch Religions of the World: Hinduism, a documentary on the history of the Hindu faith. 
  • HW: Read the children's book, How Ganesha Got His Elephant Head.

Tuesday

  • We will continue the documentary, perhaps even finishing it? 
  • HW: Begin to draft your comparative essay (Campbell's monomyth and film of your choice). Rather than dwell on the obvious connections, explore the most interesting, least noticed connection between the two, and say more about that. Due Monday. 

Wednesday

  • Crossword day! While students are working on a crossword review of Hindu terms, I will continue college essay conferences. 
  • HW: Begin to read the introduction to The Ramayana, pages vii through xi.

Thursday

  • Creating a "fact sheet" with background information on the Ramayana, from the Narayan introduction.
  • HW: Finish the introduction, up through and including xvi.

Friday

  • Beginning to read the Ramayana in class .
  • HW: Remember that a draft of your college essay is due Monday. Your monomyth-film essay is due Wednesday. Finish reading chapter one, "Rama's Initiation" for class on Monday as well.
