Syllabus for week of November 10

HAVING COMPLETED Narayan's The Ramayana, students will finish writing an essay on the myth's meaning, analyzing it in the context of Campbell's monomyth AND in the context of contemporary life. We will begin reading Lombardo translation in class this week. 

Monday

  • We will finish the documentary on Troy as an introduction to Homer's Illiad. I will collect claims on The Ramayana.
    HW: Post your claims on our blog, as well as your supporting reasons. We will review this in class on Tuesday. If you did not turn in a hard copy, please bring it in Tuesday.

Tuesday

  • Reviewing claims  on the blog. We will discuss how to revise these, eliminating to be linking verbs, vague pronouns, adding specific language. We will also look at specificity of the claim itself, making sure you get to the so what.
  • HW: Work on revising your claim, and bring in a new hard copy in class today.

Wednesday

  • Small group discussion of claims, comparing claims and troubleshooting them. We will also discuss writing the supporting reasons for your paper. 
  • HW: Draft your body paragraphs to your paper on The Ramayana.

Thursday

  • Beginning class by reading the background materials on Homer's Iliad. We will do this in the round, taking turns reading aloud for the first half of class. We will then begin listening to Homer's epic poem. You can find the audio to the poem in my read folder (head to the N: drive, read>read>English>Easton>MythandMind...inside there should be a folder on the Iliad. The files are all mp3 format).
  • HW: Finish your essay on the Indian epic poem.

Friday

  • Today we will finish reading through the introductory materials on Homer's Iliad, and will also finish listening to book one. 
  • HW: This weekend, finish your paper on The Ramayana. Single sided, double spaced, with header/name, due Monday.
