Syllabus for week of November 17

THIS WEEK we will begin in earnest The Iliad by Homer. Make sure you are working from the Lombardo translation. The audio has Lombardo reading his own work, and it is quite good. I would ask that you listen to the books as you read them, as his inflections aid understanding. Once you have read your essay aloud and received feedback, you will have one week to revise. I leave keeping track of those deadlines to students, so please pay attention to when you read.

Monday

  • Collecting Ramayana essays. And then finishing the background story to the Iliad, the story of the Trojan War.

  • HW: Finish reviewing your annotations of book one.

Tuesday

  • Feedback on Ramayana essays. We will have three students read their work, and then discuss a constructive but critical approach to revising the work. All students should be keeping notes on trends they see that would apply to their own work. (today Jack B., and Alyssa H. read their essays).

  • HW: Work on revising your claim, and bring in a new hard copy in class today.

Wednesday

  • We will review the summary notes for book two, and then begin listening to book three. Two questions: What do you make of Helen's role in the war? What do you make of the armies state of readiness for battle? Then we will return to feedback on Ramayana essays. (Stephanie C. and Cat H. read their essays).
  • HW: Finish reading and listening to book three.

Thursday

  • Starting off by reading essays. If we have time, we will discuss book three. (Jackson, Max, and Kenneth read._ Short overview of book four (which we will NOT read) and book five (which we WILL read).

  • HW: Read book five tonight.

Friday

  • More feedback on essays. Time permitting, a short lecture on book three and five.
  • HW: This weekend you are reading books six, seven and eight. Remember to use the audio!
