Syllabus for Week of February 17

Monday

  • No classes meet, on account of Presidents Day.
  • HW: Your draft of the Chocolate/Special essay is due Wednesday. The most basic structure you should use is that of comparison/contrast, though you need to explore the similarities and dissimilarities with complexity. Direct citation from LWFC, indirect citation from the film.

Tuesday

  • No classes today, on account of a district-wide professional development day.
  • HW: Be prepared to both hand-in and to read-aloud your essay on the novel Like Water for Chocolate and the film Today's Special. We will also start reading our next novel Life of Pi, this week. So bring your copy of that. You should also continue to bring the Jung text.

Wednesday

  • Reading a short selection from Plato, Aristophones' speech on the mythological origins of gender. We will also read the "Author's Note" in Life of Pi, the short albeit important construct in the novel.
  • HW: Read chapters 1-4.

Thursday

  • Students reading aloud from their essays, and taking stylistic notes for a revision. Discussion: What is the essential nature of a sloth? Why's the mythological importance of swimming? Why does humanity create zoos?
  • HW: Read chapter 5-6, and begin revising your essays. Revisions are due four calendar days after we discuss your essay in class.

Friday

  • Second (and possibly the last) day of reading essays. Discussion: How does Pi define himself? Why might that be important? How do we define ourselves? Why is that important?
  • HW: Revise your essays. Read chapter seven. Complete the two-page writing journal, "A Teacher."
