Syllabus for March 10

Monday

  • Who is Pi? We will review the Jungian concept of self as illustrated on page 49 of Jung: A Very Short Introduction.We will complete this sheet during class. 
  • HW: Tonight will be a catch up night for most in the class. Read pages 162-186 for class on Tuesday (up to chapter 62).

Tuesday

  • Today we will report out on the results of our small group work in class. Then we will return to the documentary on the Endeavor for the last part of class. 
  • HW: Read the next twenty or so pages, up to chapter 77 (p. 211)

Wednesday

  • Continuing our discussion of Pi. How is Pi both physically and psychologically at risk? Is he becoming a different person? Or is he becoming the person he has always been?
  • HW: Read chapters Read up to chapter 87 in Life of Pi (p. 236)

Thursday

  • Watching more of the documentary, "The Endurance." 
  • HW: Read up through and including chapter 92 (p. 256)

Friday

  • Today: the Island. How is this an extended metaphor for Pi's experience? We will listen for a bit, and perhaps watch parts of the the film version of the novel. 
  • HW: Finish the novel. In class writing experience on Monday.
