LAST WEEK we finished reading the first chapter of The Hero with 1,000 Faces. It detailed departure within the monomyth. We also discussed how Santiago experienced departure, and watched the first part of Star Wars, Luke Skywalker's call to adventure, refusal of the call, encounter with guardians, experience with the supernatural, and entrance into the belly of the whale.

Monday

As last week's syllabus first mentioned, we'll look at another film version of departure: The Matrix, wherein we will see the hero Neo(phyte) work through the aforementioned stages. We will begin to discuss

Tuesday

Today in class we will read together "Woman as the Temptress." Is the hero journey primarily one dominated by men? What is the role of Fatima in Santiago's journey? We will also see Luke Skywalker meet Princess Leah.
HW: No homework.

Wednesday

Reading "Atonement with the Father" in class.
HW: Finish reading this section by Tuesday. Tonight you should post the question you're answering for the college essay assignment on our blog posting. Please remember to delete any reference to the school itself, placing "_________" wherever a name or place appears in the question. Do, however, include any language prior to or after the quote.

Thursday

Today we will revisit the English Department handouts on college essays. We will also look at the posted essay questions, so please make sure yours is published prior to class. Discussion on approaching questions, and brainstorming for the essays.
HW: Reading from "Atonement with the Father" tonight.

Friday

We will return to our discussion of the initiation stage, and Star Wars. We may also have time for drafting of essays, so please do have access to your essays via ipads for class.
HW: This weekend we will begin finish reading the initiation stage with "The Ultimate Boon," and then will start the third chapter by reading the first two parts, of "the return": read part one, "The Refusal of the Return" and "The Magic Flight" for class on Tuesday (no class on Monday).
