Syllabus for week of September 8

LAST WEEK students puzzled out how to watch video remotely, as you watched part one of the Power of Myth video. Students also completed an in-class essay on The Alchemist, and likewise fit examples from the novel into Campbell's monomyth (hero-journey stages).

Monday

  • Today we will start with a discussion of "Departure" handout, exploring how Santiago encounters heralds on his journey, who they are and how he responds to them. We will then look at Luke Skywalker's herald, the call to adventure in the stars, the invitation of his mentor Obi Wan Kenobi to learn the ways of the force, and fight the evil Empire.
  • HW: If you haven't done so, purchase the books in the bookstore! Tonight, read the next four pages of the Campbell: chapter 1, part 2: Refusal of the Call.

Tuesday

  • Because I forgot to post part 2, we will read together "Refusal of the Call." We will also watch what happens in Star Wars when Luke refuses the call to adventure. We will read together and discuss how that's expressed in Santiago's journey.
  • HW: Read part 3, "Supernatural Aid."

Wednesday

  • In class reading of part 4, "Crossing the first threshold" , and watch the Mos Eisley portion of Star Wars.tonight. part 5,  We will watch the destruction of Alderan and the capture of the Millennium Falcon as it's swallowed by the Death Star.
  • HW: Reading "The Belly of the Whale.

Thursday

  • Now that we have read, in depth, Campbell's chapter on "departure," we will review the components of this stage of the hero journey. At what points does Santiago waver from his journey, why then, and how is he prompted back into his journey? Where do we see the heralding? Refusal of the call? Supernatural forces at work? Thresholds? The belly of the whale? Large group discussion and notes.
  • HW: No homework tonight.

Friday

  • Today we will read together the first section of chapter two, the introduction of the second stage, "Initiation."
  • HW: Reading on Joseph Campbell, "Initiation." Hard copies were distributed in class, but you can also find it here.
