Quarter 2, Week 1 Syllabus, 10/19/15

NOW THAT YOU'VE FINISHED THE RAMAYANA multigenre essay, we will start looking in Jungian archetypes and the contemporary novel Like Water for Chocolate. It is both a survival story and a love story, both of which involve Tita. The novel is set in turn-of-the-century revolutionary Mexico, and captures the political upheaval on a personal and familial basis. At the same time, we will begin a parallel study of Jungian psychology, applying what we learn to Tita's experiences.

Monday

  • Because students did not bring their books, we will finish reviewing the "Love" chapter from Releasing the Hero Within. I will meet with students individually to review first quarter grades.

  • HW: Bring your copy of Like Water for Chocolate to class.

Tuesday

  • Reading chapter one of our new novel. Remember to annotate: circle words, write questions, and take notes on Tita's hero journey. What is her story? What type of person is she? How does she manage conflict? How well does she adjust to her trials?
  • HW: Complete the study guide for chapter one tonight, due tomorrow. Here's a link to the guide.

Wednesday

  • Continuing our analysis of the novel, reading chapter two together, taking turns reading aloud.
  • HW: Finish the chapter two questions for class tomorrow.

Thursday

  • Reading a chapter from Robin Robertson's Beginner's Guide to Jungian Psychology, and overview of Jung's theories.
  • HW: Read chapter three and answer the questions in the guide.

Friday

  • Class discussion on the first three chapters, and an overview of Jungian psychology. This will include a short overview of Freud's theories, and how they might apply to Tita and her family.
  • HW: Read chapter four and five this weekend.
