Week 2 Syllabus, 10/26/15

WE ARE DELVING C.G. JUNG'S concept of the archetype, which our text defines as "identical psychic structures comment to all," and that archetypes "give rise to similar thoughts, images, mythologems, feelings, and ideas in people, irrespective of their class, creed, race, geographical location, or historical epoch."  How do we see these emerging in Tita's life, in Like Water for Chocolate?

Monday

  • What is the nature of Tita's love for Pedro? Reviewing the start of chapter two in Jung: A Very Short Introduction. You will want to be bringing this book to class henceforth. After reviewing the introduction to archetypes, we will then turn to LWFC, talking about the possible archetypes in her life. We will end class by reviewing the questions for chapters 4-6.

  • HW: The next study guide is due Wednesday. Read chapter six for tomorrow.

Tuesday

  • Is Tita the true mother of Roberto? How else might we understand her response to his death? Returning to chapter two of Jung: AVSI. Continuing our discussion of Tita.
  • HW: Complete the study guide for chapter four through six.

Wednesday

  • What archetype does Dr. John Brown represent? Collecting 4-6 guide. Finishing our discussion of chapter six. We will then turn to reading aloud from the Ramayana essays. Bring in your own copy so you can a) read aloud from it, and b) keep notes on your revision.
  • HW: Read chapter seven and eight, and finish the study guide for Friday.

Thursday

  • No classes today for Parent-Teacher Conference Night.

Friday

  • Collect 7-8 guide. Students will continue to read the Ramayana papers.
  • HW: Read chapters nine and ten for Monday. If you have already read your paper aloud, begin revising it.
