Syllabus for week of February 9, 2015
LAST WEEK WE DEALT WITH ANIMALS AND PI'S name, or more accurately, how Piscine was bullied because of his name, and then created and enforced a new identity for himself. This week, we will begin to see Pi struggle with the animal within himself, and how he asserts himself using religion, faith being a new way to define himself.
Monday
- The danger of animals. We will finish watching the two clips from Jurassic Park and the one from Surviving the Game. Short lecture on how man differentiates himself from the animals, and the role of religion. We will listen to chapters 21 and 22, and will just begin reading chapter 23.
- HW: Read chapter 23. How does Pi use religion as another way to define himself, differentiate himself from his family and other peers around him? What makes Pi unique?
Tuesday
- Small group discussion of Pi and how both zoology and religion shape him as a person. Take notes in your small groups. Notes will be collected.A After twenty minutes of discussion, we will listen to chapters 24 through 28.
- HW: Read chapters 29 through 39. Here Pi will talk about home and place. As you read, consider: does where we live in part determine who we are?
Wednesday
- Short selections from Grizzly Man, a documentary about a environmentalist who is eaten by bears in Denali National Park. We will read chapter 40 through and 41 together in class.
- HW: Read chapters 41 through 43.
Thursday
- Small group discussion and notes on the disaster that befalls Pi.
- HW: Reading chapters 44 through 46.
Friday
- More discussion about survival at sea.
- HW: Read up through and including chapter 52, up to page 146..
