Syllabus for Week of February 16, 2015

PI IS CURRENTLY AT SEA, seemingly at risk of being eaten or otherwise mauled by the grim hyena. We've discussed some of Martel's symbolism (i.e.: the ship Tsimtsum as a Kabalistic term), and began some detailed notes on the animals aboard the lifeboat with Pi. We will continue our analysis, read more about Jung's work and life, and attempt to better appreciate Pi's search for meaning in a seemingly meaningless world.

Monday

  • No school on account of Presidents' Day.
  • HW: You should have read through and including chapter 52.

Tuesday

  • How is being lost at sea / stranded on an island a metaphor for self-examination? What about isolation seems both a blissful paradise and scathing hell? What would Jung say about this extended metaphor? Brief lecture, a short clip from Madagascar, and some notes on the life boat.
  • HW: Read chapters 52-54 for class on Wednesday.

Wednesday

  • Reading selections from chapter three in Jung: A Very Short Introduction. We are going to look at the self, the ego, the persona, and the shadow. How do these aspects apply to Pi?
  • HW: Read chapters 55-57.

Thursday

  • We will continue with Jung today, including sex and gender, anima and animus.  We will also watch a selection from the film Castaway.
  • HW: Read up through and including chapter 60.

Friday

  • In Jung: a self-regulating system, a programme for life, archetypal expectations, and rites of passage.  We will watch a selection from the film Lord of the Flies.
  • HW:  Read the last few pages of chapter three in Jung. Also read through chapter 70.
