SYLLABUS FOR MARCH 9, 2015

TRANSITIONING TO 1001 NIGHTS,  this week we will finish Life of Pi by looking at a film entitled, Today's Special, a somewhat corny though very-well-acted romantic comedy starring Asif Mandi as an Indian-American, New York chef, Samir, who loses his job only to gain a new appreciation for his heritage, his family, and his true passion for life. Students will ultimately write a Jungian analysis on Samir while we review the introductory materials on Arabian Nights.

Monday

  • Review of chapter four in Jung: A Very Short Introduction. We will then move into the film Today's Special.
  • HW: Read the introduction to Sindbad; this should be finished for class on Wednesday.

Tuesday

  • Continuing with the film. We have seen Samir's call-to-adventure (his father's untimely heart-attack). Now we shall see his mentor Akbar work his instructional magic on Samir, as he accepts the call, battling away at the demons within him.
  • HW: The introduction to Sindbad should be read by class tomorrow.

Wednesday

  • Passing out an initial, Jungian analysis sheet on Samir. We will then finish watching the film, and students will finish their notes on Samir.
  • HW: Read the second introduction to 1001 Nights, and annotate for the questions in the margins. This second introduction is due Friday.

Thursday

  • Reading background material on Arabian (1001) Nights, of which "The 7 Voyages of Sindbad" is one. We will read an essay by a profession on the history of the text, and also review the five pillars of Islam.
  • HW: Complete the second Haddawy introduction for class on Friday.

Friday

  • Crossword day! Working on a new crossword for Arabian Nights.
  • HW:  Read the first three voyages this weekend, keeping notes on the sheets provided in class.
