Syllabus for March 23, 2015

SINDBAD THE SAILOR'S  voyage seems to be about issues of class: wealth, poverty, luxury, toil. His voyage also seems to be about God: providence, punishment, the blessings bestowed upon the chosen, the punishment and trials enacted by God. We will continue to explore the duality of experience this week as we finish The Seven Voyages of Sindbad.

Monday

  • Discussion of voyage seven. We will also watch the 1930s Popeye cartoon that pits Popeye, the force for American good, against Sindbad, the Middle Eastern quasi-Eastern European force of greed and violence.
  • HW: Review these journeys. We are going to have an in class essay on Wednesday on the Sindbad tales.

Tuesday

  • Discussing the most obvious and the more insightful interpretations of the Sindbad voyage. What does this story mean on a superficial, interpretive level? Given some thought, what does the story mean on a more insightful, nuanced level? Keeping notes in your books so they will be readily available for the essay. We will close with a bit from George Carlin's "A Place for My Stuff."
  • HW: Review your notes for tomorrow's essay.

Wednesday

  • Writing a response to this question: Why does Sindbad the Sailor invite Sindbad the Porter into his home and tell him these tales? You will write your essay in the same bluebook you wrote the Life of Pi essays.
  • HW: Read the first half of "The Story of 'Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves," up to page 78, "Meanwhile, the thief..." If Qasim is the shadow of Ali Baba, what is this story about in terms of Jungian psychology?

Thursday

  • Discussion on Ali Baba.  We will conduct a Jungian analysis of the first half of the tale, the discovery of the thieves hidden treasure, Ali Baba's plan, his sister-in-law and brother's response, the resulting of their actions.
  • HW: Read the second half of the "'Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves." As you read tonight, consider carefully the role of Marjana. What role does she play in the Jungian interpretation of the text?

Friday

  • We will finish discussing 'Ali Baba and also watch the second (and final) Popeye cartoon, "Popeye Meets the 40 Thieves."
  • HW: Welcome to Spring Break! When we return, we'll read, "The Story of 'Ala al-Din and the Magic Lamp."
