Syllabus for Week of April 6, 2015

ALI BABA  has completed his journey, living in peace and wealth for the rest of his life. This week, we will explore the biographical life of Carl Jung, and will then turn our attention to the story of 'Ala al-Din and the Magic Lamp. Later in forth quarter, once done with 1001 Nights, we will turn to fairy tales, thus closing out the year.

Monday

  • Introductory lecture on Jung: Neil deGrasse Tyson, UFOs, and teaching racism in American 1960s. We will begin reading the first chapter of Jung: A Very Short Introduction.
  • HW: Read up through "Friendship with Freud" on page 18 in Jung. Also, make a point of listening to the BBC discussion on Jung by class on Friday.

Tuesday

  • Continuing with Jung's biography, starting by reviewing a handout.  We will then return to our reading of the short introduction, taking notes on Jung's life.
  • HW: Read up to "Confrontation with the unconscious" on page 28 in Jung. The following link is an abbreviated version of the discussion I demonstrated in class on Monday:

Wednesday

  • Today we will begin watching a lecture on Jung by Sean Kelly of the California Institute of Integral Studies, Professor of Philosophy, Cosmogony, and Consciousness.
  • HW: Begin reading "The Story of 'Ala-al-Din and the Magic Lamp," up to page 113, "This is my adventure and the danger I have faced, since you last saw me."  Have that read for class on Friday.

Thursday

  • HW: Make sure you finish the BBC interviews linked above for class.

Friday

  • Reading aloud from "The Story of 'Ala al-Din and the Magic Lamp," starting on page 113, "'Ala al-Din's mother listened patiently, without interrupting this surprising and wonderful story, which was at the same time painful to a mother who loved her son tenderly, in spite of her faults."
  • HW: Read up through and including page 146 for homework.
