October 3, Syllabus

WE NOW WILL SHIFT TO NARAYAN'S TRANSLATION OF The Ramayana. Please make sure you have his translation of the epic, Indian poem (there are many, many versions of the poem). We will also finish the film Star Wars in class, and students will begin reading their aphorism assignments aloud.

MONDAY

  • Reading an overview of current scholarship on mythology, the leaders in the field, the different ways of approaching and understanding mythology, and how to think about what myths mean. I will collect the aphorism assignment, and students will begin reading those aloud on Wednesday.
  • HW: No homework for religious holiday. Our next book will be The Ramayana, trans. by R.K. Narayan. It's important that you have this particular edition of the poem. No other will do!
