Week 1 Syllabus, 3/14/16
PI IS NOW STRANDED ON HIS LIFEBOAT, a clear metaphor for his experience in society. It is through this isolation that his faith will come into sharp focus. Can he give up being a vegetarian to eat animals at sea, so he can survive? Can he learn to exist with the violent animal in the lifeboat, or will be succumb to fear and violence?
MONDAY
- Discussing Pi's religious views, and taking notes on what he comes to believe and why.
- HW: Reading up through page 112, or chapter 43.
TUESDAY
- Distributing grade reports and worksheet #3 for Life of Pi. We will listen to chapters 43-46 in class. We will also begin copying annotations on Pi's religious views onto worksheet #3 together.
- HW: Read up to chapter 47. Complete worksheet #3 for class tomorrow.
WEDNESDAY
- Today we are meeting in the Gates Gym to participate in the PESO students' basketball game. Look for and congregate around me in the lower, south side of the stands.
- HW: Read chapters 47 through 49. You should be up to page 137 by class on Thursday.
THURSDAY
- How is Pi's early experience in the lifeboat, with the animals, an extension of his experience prior to the sinking of his ship, and what conclusions does he draw about life, meaning, via these animals?
- HW: Read up to chapter 54. You should be on page 156 by class on Friday.
FRIDAY
- Today we will begin looking at another story of survival at sea, that of Shackleton's doomed trip to the Antarctic.
- HW: Read through chapter 61. Be on page 186 when you return from break.
