Week 4 Syllabus, 4/11/16
FOR PI, THE INDIVIDUATION PROCESS MEANS that he is in a continual process of becoming, is a combination of complexes that seemingly contradict one another. When outlining your essay on his journey, remember to review your notes on Jung's individuation process. That should be an important part of your essay.
MONDAY
- How is Pi's experiences an extension of Jung's individuation process? Lecture, discussion. I will also collect your illustrations of the island.
- HW: Handing out the introduction to Hadway's first edition of 1001 Nights. You will want to have read this by class on Thursday, when we begin reading Sindbad and Other Tales from Arabian Nights.
TUESDAY
- What do you get when you combine Pi's hero-journey of self-discovery at sea with the recipe's from Like Water for Chocolate? You get Today's Special, that's what.
- HW: Essay test tomorrow. Prepare an outline, with passages from both Life of Pi and Jung: A Very Short Introduction.
WEDNESDAY
- In-class essay on Life of Pi.
- HW: Read chapter 5 of IM by Friday.
THURSDAY
- Initial lecture on reading 1001 nights. We will spend at least 1/2 of class looking at essays, reading them aloud to the class and discussing revisions. The last ten minutes of class, we will return to the film.
- HW: Reading pages xxx through xxx of Arabian Nights.
FRIDAY
- Finishing Today's Special.
- HW: Read xxx for Monday.
