Week 3 Syllabus, 4/4/16

WE HAVE NOW SEEN THE PSYCHOLOGICAL DETERIORATION OF PI , who is now a mere shadow of his former self. His former self has been burned off by sun and salt. Here we see Pi enter his unconsciousness, and the novel takes on an eerie, surreal quality. We are now in his dream state, closer to his inner self (and death) than ever before. While there he encounters the 23-food long beast from deep, a shark that has come to consume him.

MONDAY

  • We will debrief our hero-journey story writing from BYKTWD 2016, and will then return to the biography of Carl Jung.
  • HW: Catch up day. If you aren't on page 256, get there.

TUESDAY

  • We will finish the documentary, part one of "Carl Jung: The Wisdom of the Dream," part one. We'll revisit chapter 67 and 68, wherein Pi uses his "dream rag" to self-asphyxiate himself and he confronts death in the form of a 23-foot long shark from the void.
  • HW: Read through the bottom of page 267 by class on Wednesday.

WEDNESDAY

  • Discussion of the stranger on the boat: Is this an actual person, or a hallucination from his subconsciousness?
  • HW: Read chapter 93, up to and including page 284.

THURSDAY

  • Discussion of the island: what is this place? Is it physical reality, or a creation from Pi's imagination?
  • HW: Finish the book.

FRIDAY

  • Discussion: Which truth is more true? The story Pi tells our narrator, or the story Pi tells the Japanese investigators?
  • HW: Brainstorm for the in-class essay on Monday.
