September 19 Syllabus

WE ARE CONCLUDING OUR STUDY OF THE ALCHEMIST this week, but you are only starting your journey to post-New Trier. This week you will sign up for a first draft conference. Those of you who already have a working first draft should sign up for appointments early in the week. Because I teach during both 4th and 6th periods lunch, some may struggle to find a meeting time. If needed, we can meet before or after school.

MONDAY

  • Reviewing brainstorming activities and completing one of them together in class. We will share those results out, writing the word on the inside of your placard. Subsequently, we will begin reviewing The Alchemist for aphorisms with a partner that you will keep through this text.
  • HW: Revisit and revise your college essay. Make sure it is what you want it to be before our individual writing conference. Tonight, read it aloud to yourself. You will discover things that you want to change.

TUESDAY

  • We will begin by meeting with yesterday's partners, and spend 20 minutes reviewing the text for aphorisms. Subsequently, we will continue searching the text for aphorisms.
  • HW: Continue writing your first draft of the college essay.

WEDNESDAY

  • We will sign up for writing conferences that will take place this week and next; I've send out an email that links to a google pages document. To edit that, you need to open it in Pages rather than downloading it. 2nd period: sharing out your favorite aphorism to date; 6th period: continuing to review the text in small groups, looking for aphorisms.
  • HW: Final day of assigned writing, first draft of college essay.

THURSDAY

  • We will begin journaling, practice brainstorming for the college essay. We will read aloud, together, three other essays written by actual NT graduates from the Class of 2016. The last half of class, we will return to the paired analysis of Part 2, which you read last night.
  • HW: Read through page 125 of Alchemist tonight...that is up to the end of the posted audio.

FRIDAY

  • Returning to The Alchemist. We will review both worksheets that we've been working on, both the hero journey notes, as well the aphorism notes. Then, we will listen to Jeremy Irons reading of the text, starting where we left off this weekend past.
  • HW: Finish reading The Alchemist for class on Thursday.
