January 23, Syllabus

THIS WEEK WE WILL FINALIZE FIRST semester grades and begin to look at Carl Jung. For some reason, the book store returned the copies of Jung: A Very Short Introduction by Stevens. So you should purchase your copy on your own. I would recommend the cheapest copy possible, and for this book only, an e-book will be fine. You can find a kindle edition of it here. We will also finish Homer's Iliad, looking at Achilles and comparing him to Heracles.

MONDAY

  • Returning annotations of Homer's Iliad. Finishing the first part of Dr. Borhee article on Jung's theory of self.
  • HW: Read the next 10 pages of the Jung autobiography, chapter one of Jung VSI.

TUESDAY

  • We will return briefly to the Dr. Borhee article. Subsequently, we will turn our attention to Achilles and begin some small group research on Achilles.
  • HW: Read the last 10 pages of chapter one of the Jung VSI.

WEDNESDAY

  • We will begin sharing the findings relating to Achilles. We will begin listening to an interview with Angie Hobbs, author of Plato and the Hero: Courage, Manliness, and the Impersonal Good.
  • HW: Finish listening to this podcast. You can find it here. Begin writing a claim proposal that you will share with the class tomorrow. What is the most important, least obvious thing to know about Achilles as a hero? Due tomorrow.

THURSDAY

  • Reading through your responses to yesterday's question. Time permitting, we will begin writing the first draft of this essay. You should directly cite four sources, one of which is Homer's Iliad
  • HW: Working on the essay, due Monday.

FRIDAY

  • Discussing the life of Carl Jung. Make sure you have the Stevens book with you!
  • HW: First draft of the essay due Monday.
