February 7, Syllabus
FOR THE FIRST TWO WEEKS OF SEMESTER TWO, we've worked on exploring Jungian psychology in the Jung: A Very Short Introduction textbook, and likewise have been revising our Iliad essays. The revisions are due one week after students have presented their papers to the class. We're likewise beginning our reading of Laura Esquivel's Like Water for Chocolate. Students must have hard copies of this novel. I will not collect and grade ebook versions of the novel.
MONDAY
- Students presenting their Achilles essays. Remember, students are responsible for engaging this revision process by providing writers with feedback, both identifying what's been done well and what requires revision, and examples of how to accomplish that. This week we will review five essays per day until we're finished with presentations.
- HW: Read the first chapter of Like Water for Chocolate (LWFC). Students should be keeping notes on Tita's essential conflict(s) and her hero journey. We will be examining her life through the lens of Jungian psychology as well as Campbell's hero journey.
TUESDAY
- Reading an additional five essays. Short overview of LWFC.
- HW: Read the second chapter of LWFC.
WEDNESDAY
- Continuing with our reading and evaluation of the Achilles essays.
- HW: Review your annotations to chapters one and two of LWFC.
THURSDAY
- Reading the next four-to-five essays.
- HW: Reading chapter three in LWFC.
FRIDAY
- Last day of reading Achilles essays. Discussion of chapters one-through-three in LWFC.
- HW: Who is Tita relative to Jungian psychology? Campbell's monomyth? One page response, typed, due Monday.
