February 13, Syllabus

TURN IN YOUR REVISION OF THE ACHILLES essay stapled to the front of your first draft, the one with my written comments upon it. This week we will delve into Jungian archetypes, paying particular attention to the lover archetype, but also some regard to the warrior archetype. Tita represents more than one, of course. As do the other characters in LWFC.

MONDAY

  • Examining chapters 1 thru 3 in LWFC. We will watch Tita and Pedro fall in love, and the wedding party vomit up Tita's wedding cake. Subsequently, we will discuss Mama Elena's personality, examining why she is the way she is. Ending class with a personal narrative response journal to the first three chapters.
  • HW: Read the forth chapter, "April."

TUESDAY

  • Completing the "Hero Myth Index" survey from Carol Pearson's Awakening the Heroes Within: 12 Archetypes to Help Us Find Ourselves and Transform Our World. We will then break into small groups to discuss Sparknotes analysis of chapter four, and then individually write your own addition to their shortsighted commentary.  If not done, we will start tomorrow with this activity.
  • HW: Read the fifth chapter of LWFC, "May."

WEDNESDAY

  • Starting to read chapter three of Jung: A Very Short Introduction, "The stages of life." We will slowly read through the sections on self, ego, and persona, and begin conducting an analysis of Tita from that Jungian perspective.
  • HW: Read the next section of Jung, "The shadow," Sex and gender," and "Animus and anima."

THURSDAY

  • We will continue applying the Jungian terms to Tita in LWFC. What is her shadow self like? Have we seen anything in the novel so far that would help us understand who Tita is and how conflict controls her life?
  • HW: Reading chapter six in LWFC, "June."

FRIDAY

  • Reviewing our class notes from yesterday, and adding some to our understanding of the shadow complex. We will begin taking notes on "Jung: The Wisdom of Dreams Pt. 2"
  • HW: Read chapter seven in LWFC. On Monday, we will continue notes on the documentary at minute 15:00
