February 20, Syllabus
TURN IN YOUR REVISION OF THE ACHILLES essay stapled to the front of your first draft, the one with my written comments upon it. This week we will delve into Jungian archetypes, paying particular attention to the lover archetype, but also some regard to the warrior archetype. Tita represents more than one, of course. As do the other characters in LWFC.
MONDAY
- Beginning with reading a chapter of Pearson's book on the lover archetype.
- HW: Read chapter seven of LWFC.
TUESDAY
- Overview of seven types of love, as defined by Plato and as incorporated into western civilization. We will then transition into "The Lover & the Goddess," a Moyers/Campbell interview that is part of the Power of Myth series.
- HW: Finish reading the chapter on the lover archetype from Pearson's Awakening the Hero Within.
WEDNESDAY
- Starting to read chapter three of Jung: A Very Short Introduction, "The stages of life." We will slowly read through the sections on self, ego, and persona, and begin conducting an analysis of Tita from that Jungian perspective.
- HW: Read the next section of Jung, "The shadow," Sex and gender," and "Animus and anima."
THURSDAY
- We will continue applying the Jungian terms to Tita in LWFC. What is her shadow self like? Have we seen anything in the novel so far that would help us understand who Tita is and how conflict controls her life?
- HW: Reading chapter six in LWFC, "June."
FRIDAY
- No school for professional development day.
- HW: Read chapter seven in LWFC.
