February 27, Syllabus
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A GODDESS in a world controlled by Gods? This week we will examine a few goddesses, starting with Asherah, the counterpart to the Sumerian Anu and possible a deity expunged from the Bible. Was Asherah a consort to Yahweh?
MONDAY
- Watching a selection from "Did God Have a Wife?" and reading two critical reviews of the documentary, and analytical and one satirical.
- HW: No homework. As you move through seminar day, pay careful attention to the idea of paired opposites and identity. How is Du Bois's idea of double consciousness in racial identity fit with Jung's concept of archetypes and paired opposites? We will discuss your experience on Wednesday.
TUESDAY
- No classes for Seminar Day.
- HW: As yesterday. Come to class prepared to discuss questions posed on Monday's homework.
WEDNESDAY
- Finishing chapter three of Jung: A Very Short Introduction.
- HW: Read the end of chapter three, from "The Dynamic of Progress" through "Individuation of the Self."
THURSDAY
- Today I will return the hero/archetype analysis along with a copy of the chapter describing your dominant type. Today, in small groups when possible, you will begin reading through these chapters. We will start with the warrior.
- HW: Reading chapter nine in LWFC, "August."
FRIDAY
- Discussion day. Come to class prepared to argue a) why Tita's experience is heroic and b) in which ways she is conflicted.
- HW: Read chapter "September" and "October" in LWFC. Next week we will finish the novel.
