Syllabus for 3/18 through 3/22

INDIVIDUATION IS JUNGIAN PSYCHOLOGY’S MAIN tenent. All people are a collection of complexes, and our goal in life is to achieve balance. This process is called “individuation.” For Jung, this is our life’s work, to become a whole person.

MONDAY

  • In small groups, we will finish our reading of chapter one, the longest, in our text Jung: A Very Short Introduction.

  • Take a break. No homework.

TUESDAY

  • Returning to ancient Greece for one day. We will look at both Agamemnon and Achilles’s conversation with Odysseus in Hades in Homer’s Odyssey. Do we see a different hero than what we see in the Iliad? What does this passage teach us about trust in women? About children?

  • Read chapter 1 of Life of Pi.

WEDNESDAY

  • Beginning with a documentary on Carl Jung, “The Wisdom of the Dream.” Students will keep notes, turning them in when done on Thursday.

  • Read chapter 2 in Life of Pi

THURSDAY

  • Finishing the documentary from yesterday. We will then turn toward Achilles. In what way is Achilles a conflicted person, and what mythical legends should we take from this ancient Greek hero? Students will begin writing the first half of a paper that a) analyzes the hero and b) connects the mythological lesson to contemporary society.

  • Read chapter 3 and 4 in Life of Pi.

FRIDAY

  • First day of discussion of Life of Pi.

  • No homework. When we return, we’ll be in the library to work on the Achilles paper.
