Week 4, Syllabus for 11/9/15
JUNG'S ARCHETYPES--THE SELF, EGO, SHADOW, ANIMUS & ANIMA--how do these emerge in Esquivel's Like Water for Chocolate and our protagonist, Tita? That will be the focus of your essay, analyzing Tita through a Jungian lens. You will also turn in your revision of the Ramayana essay.
Monday
Reading chapter three from Jung: A Very Short Introduction. We will cover the self, the ego, and the shadow complexes.
HW: The Ramayana revision is due Wednesday. Staple your old draft with revision notes UNDERNEATH the new draft.
Tuesday
- Today we will reflect on the ending of Like Water for Chocolate in the context of what Jung says about sex and gender, the aniums and the anima. We will then turn to LWFC and begin work on the worksheets on chapters 10-12, due Thursday.
- HW: Staple the new draft on TOP of the old draft, and have it ready to turn in on Wednesday.
Wednesday
- Collect the Ramayana revisions. After completing a reflection, we will look into the self-regulating system, a programme for life, archetypal expectations, and rites of passage. What is Tita's system of regulation? What rites of passage does she go through? And which archetypes are at work in her life?
- HW: Guide for chapters 10-12 is due Tomorrow.
Thursday
- Collecting the last LWFC guide. Today we will also finish reviewing chapter three of Jung: AVSI together in class, looking at the dynamics of progress, love and marriage, the stroke of noon, and the individuation of the self. We will then return to last Friday's handout, "Carl Jung" by Dr. George Boeree.
- HW: Who is Tita? For homework, I want you to brainstorm at least one page filled with notes. Bring crayons to class on Friday.
Friday
- Discussing the Jung overview presented in the Boeree handout. Bring questions. I will also lecture on the next essay.
- HW: I will collect the Like Water for Chocolate annotations on Monday. Review those, making sure they reflect what you think of Tita through both Campbell and Jung.
